Elisabeth of Hungary settled in Marburg in 1228, cared for the sick and died here in 1231. She was canonised in 1235 and the church begun over her tomb that year is one of the first Gothic churches in Germany.

Marburg is a historic university town in central Germany, in the state of Hessen. It was the home of Saint Elisabeth of Hungary (1207–1231), whose church, begun over her tomb in 1235, still dominates the lower town.
Marburg is a fairy-tale university town known for its medieval architecture, cobbled streets and the Landgrave’s Castle perched above the city. Its town hall on the market square is extremely beautiful.
Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) is about 97 km away, a little over an hour by train. Marburg’s twin town in France is Poitiers (since 1961).
